Now, in the game’s backstory, the ancient alien race, the Nomai, treated journeying to the quantum moon as a sort of sacred pilgrimage. The developers are imagining blowing this effect up to objects the size of an entire moon. In real life, objects with this property, or rather the effects of such objects, have only been observed on the sub-microscopic scale. The act of observation somehow resolves the uncertainty of its position and it appears in one place, until the observer looks away again. It is a quantum object, meaning its position is uncertain until it is observed. This is a moon that can be spotted orbiting each of the solar system’s various planets, seemingly jumping between each when you aren’t looking. You see, one of the other main mysteries the game centres around is that of the quantum moon. It’s definitely worth it, it’s a really special game and it benefits massively from being played blind.īut it has a problem and a serious one at that. You can pick it up on Epic games store for £10 (or your regional equivalent) if you use a coupon. If you haven’t played it, I would definitely recommend it. The things I want to say about this game will require me to spoil it. The specifics of which will almost certainly be spoilers. The 22 minute loop is really essential to how this plays out, as things will change in the solar system over its course in a predictable fashion, allowing you to do… well… all sorts of things. This solar system was inhabited by an ancient long dead race called the Nomai and much of the gameplay centres around decoding their messages and working out what they knew and what they were doing. Why this is happening to you becomes one of the central mysteries that you can solve while playing the game. After that happens the sun explodes, you and everyone else in the system dies, then you wake up again at the beginning of the 22 minute loop. The solar system is yours to explore as you see fit, but you’ll only have 22 minutes in which to do it. As the latest Hearthian astronaut, it is up to you what you do. You are a member of a primitive looking, though space faring species called Hearthians.

The game is set in a tiny star system around a dying sun. It certainly has much in common with these games but it also shares a great deal of its DNA with space sims like Elite: Dangerous and narrative walking simulators like Gone Home. I referred to it initially (It could be referred to) as an adventure game, which is already a very broad genre label, applied to everything from the Legend of Zelda to Monkey Island. One of the many ways that Mobius Digital’s Outer Wilds is unprecedented is its genre. So, I now feel it would be more productive, and frankly original of me, to centre one of the game’s failures. All the things that are good about Outer Wilds have already been praised to high heaven and I probably agree with most of it.

However, I’m saying all this up front because the main thing I have to say about it is quite negative. Luckily I had not heard so much that the game’s moments of genuine discovery were lost on me and overall my impression of it is very very positive. I had already heard about the way it employs concepts from physics and its great world, music and character design. But I came to Mobius Digital’s mind bending adventure game a little over a year late.

They would need highlighting and doing so would inevitably make such a review sound more positive. If I had reviewed Outer Wilds when it came out, my take on the game would almost certainly come across as far more positive, because all the revolutionary, exciting new things that the game does would be new to me and to the discourse.
